Chapter Nine
Topaz
Their first day on the road had been filled with excitement, danger, and for Topaz, much pleasure. They ate heartily at Nellyâs table and drank enough to be tipsy. Helena was certainly feeling the alcohol in a way that Topaz found charming. He kept thinking of their afternoon in the bathâ¦
Helena, pulling him inâ¦her long hair covering her breasts, her hands on his torsoâ¦the steam surrounding themâ¦the way he grabbed her from behind and pulled her toward him in the waterâ¦
He wanted to grasp Helenaâs hand under the table. For an evening that began with Helenaâs possible jealousy, it certainly ended with his. Helena had been flirted with and touched and admired by too many other men. Topaz was enjoying the dinner immensely, but part of him couldnât wait to get up to their room and have Helena to himself.
When Nelly left them to do the washing up, not listening to anyoneâs pleas to help her, Oak calmly explained their disguises to the newcomer. Helena got up for what she promised would be one final glass of mead.
âSoâ¦â Marcus beganâ¦âyou are not married to Helena, in reality?â He looked at Topaz with anxious eyes.
âYes,â Topaz said through gritted teeth. âBut donât get any ideas.â
Oak looked at Topaz with curiosity.
âWhy shouldnât he get any ideas?â he asked.
âBecauseâbecauseâwe donât even know if we can trust him yet. Give it a few days for him not to kill us, for godâs sake. Then we can begin to think about him romancing our friend.â
Helena appeared behind him.
âWho are you talking about? What friend?â
âYou,â Topaz said shortly.
âAww,â Helena said, âweâre friends?â
âOf course, weâre friends,â Topaz said with exasperation. âDonât you see I go back on all my old peevishness towards you? Well, some of itâmost of itâI make decisions quickly. So, yes, Helena,â he took her hand, âwe are friends.â
âIâm glad about that,â Helena said.
Helena and Starling both appeared to be drunk, but Oak and Topaz had abstained or at least been moderate. Oak looked across the table to Topaz.
âWell,â he said. âI think we should put these two to bed.â
Topaz thought, but didnât say: Oak, I thought youâd never ask.
Before leaving, Topaz took a bottle of mead from the bar. He turned to Helena and put a finger to his lips, signaling her to keep quiet. She did a soft clap and skipped up the stairs.
Topaz bounded after her. When he reached the top of the stairs, he looked down them to see Oak smirking at him. Topaz shrugged his shoulders. Heâd have to explain to Oak later.

Helena laid out luxuriously on the bed while Topaz poured two glasses of mead. Now that he was fairly sure of getting her affections, Topaz felt more relaxed about seducing her. He laid next to her, she kissed him strongly, then put her head on his shoulder. He smoothed her hair down her back. Helena seemed to have dropped all semblance of a guard, perhaps aided by the alcohol. She acted completely like his committed lover,
